For example, in one test, using the native gzip libraries reduced decompression times by up to 50% and compression times by around 10% (compared to the built-in Java implementation). Note : For performance, it is preferable to use a native library for compression and decompression. So, for example, GzipCodec encapsulates the compression and decompression algorithm for gzip. In Hadoop, a codec is represented by an implementation of the CompressionCodec interface. Note :A codec is the implementation of a compression-decompression algorithm. ![]() ![]() ![]() Use memory protection (ie, no execute on the stack, no read or write just outside the stack).Place guard bands around the stack - empty area of memory that you fill with a magic number (usually a software interrupt instruction, but there are many options here), and hundreds or thousands of times a second you look at the guard bands to make sure they haven't been overwritten.Keep code and stack far apart (code in flash, stack in RAM, and never the twain shall meet).Disallow recursion and cycles - enforced by policy and testing. In the embedded world, especially in high reliability code (automotive, aircraft, space) you do extensive code reviews and checking, but you also do the following: Intentional cycles and recursion need to be artificially checked to error out if they call each other too many times.īeyond good programming practices, static and dynamic testing, there's not much you can do on these high level systems. You should look at your call graph (a tree structure that shows from your main what each function calls) to see how deep your function calls go, and to detect cycles and recursion that are not intended. Generally, the OS and the programming language you're using manage the stack, and it's out of your hands. Recursive functions are also a cause for this, but if you're writing recursively (ie, your function calls itself) then you need to be aware of this and use static/global variables to prevent infinite recursion. It might work most of the time, but just once the wrong input will cause it to go in that circle forever until the computer recognizes that the stack is overblown. Many programmers make this mistake by calling function A that then calls function B, that then calls function C, that then calls function A. who calls function 8 who calls function 9, but function 9 overwrites memory outside the stack. ![]() In embedded systems you might only have 256 bytes for the stack, and if each function takes up 32 bytes then you can only have function calls 8 deep - function 1 calls function 2 who calls function 3 who calls function 4. Stack overflowĪ stack overflow is when you've used up more memory for the stack than your program was supposed to use. When it's done, it frees up the local variable stack space it used, then returns to the previous function. The function you call might use up more stack for its own local variables. When you call a function in your code, the next instruction after the function call is stored on the stack, and any storage space that might be overwritten by the function call. Last in, first out (LIFO) means that the last thing you put in is always the first thing you get back out - if you push 2 items on the stack, 'A' and then 'B', then the first thing you pop off the stack will be 'B', and the next thing is 'A'. A stack, in this context, is the last in, first out buffer you place data while your program runs. ![]() ![]() ![]() We are confident that we will be able to make it and beat the price of any of our competitors. Between the counter and the N1 Centre there’s a strange set of what can best be described as stairs/shelves where you can also sit (take a look at the gallery). The counter’s on the right-hand side, with a series of bars opposite, looking out onto the balcony. You can sit outside, with a choice of the tables downstairs, a few more on the upper level, or the balcony hanging over the entrance to the N1 Centre. You enter either up the three flights of steps or via the upper level of the N1 Centre. The shop’s long and thin, not the most promising layout. What makes Tinderbox for me (and always has) is the atmosphere and eclectic seating. Served in a classic, white tulip cup, it was commendably short without approaching ristretto levels. This won’t win any third-wave enthusiasts over: it’s fairly unadventurous, smooth, with a hint of bitterness (ie just how I like it). Sadly David passed away in 2008 at the age of 42, but the links to Matthew Algie continue, Tinderbox using its Gama espresso blend. There’s also another London branch in the Paperchase on Tottenham Court Road. Tinderbox started life in Glasgow (four branches), set up by David Williamson, Managing Director of Glasgow’s Matthew Algie. Going back to the tube at Angel, I passed Tinderbox and made a mental note to visit. Then, a couple of months ago, I was visiting Vagabond N7 and Brewsters N7. I remembered it when I started the Coffee Spot, but I allowed my head to be turned by the new and exciting places springing up all over London, most of them not even a twinkle in their owners’ eyes when Tinderbox first appeared.ĭear Tinderbox, I apologise. The trade show moved to Manchester a few years ago and, with no reason to visit, my neglect of Tinderbox began. Relief flooded over me and I positively skipped up the stairs to get my fix. Heart-broken, I wandered abjectly until, completely by accident, I stumbled across Tinderbox, now relocated to the upper level of the N1 Centre. I attended the show every year and looked forward to my annual Tinderbox visits. Back then it was on Upper Street itself, where its trademark quirky atmosphere and great coffee meant it stood out from the crowd. I first came across Tinderbox almost 10 years ago while attending a trade show at the Business Design Centre. You can read more of my thoughts after the gallery. January 2015: Sadly Tinderbox closed at the end of last year. Tinderbox also has savouries such as sandwiches and stuffed flat breads. The cakes are pretty impressive, with cheesecakes and traditional Italian offerings such as cannoli, plus Portuguese favourites pastel de nata and bolo de arroz. It’s also one of a growing number of places where you can get decent coffee after six o’clock in the evening. It has an uncomplicated attitude, with a straightforward coffee and cake offering, along with a quirky attitude and layout that always makes it fun to visit. ![]() I’ve been going there for almost 10 years and it’s still one of my favourite spots. Second only to the Boston Tea Party on Bristol’s Park Street, Tinderbox has a long-standing place in my affections. Walk past the counter, up three flights of stairs at the back and you’ll find yourself in one of London’s most eclectic coffee spaces. Stand outside, though, and look up you’ll see a balcony which promises more. From the street, it’s fairly unassuming: a couple of tables outside and what looks like a short corridor with a counter on the left and a bar at the back. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, the status of the label ‘radical democracy’ is ambiguous in the book. The aim is thus to pave the way towards a construct capable of resolving the difficulties faced by each model/concept/tradition. Its intention, rather, is to draw from the writings of certain pragmatist authors theoretical intuitions which offer a way of moving beyond the false opposition between representative (or liberal) democracy, on the one hand, and radical democracy on the other. The book is explicit about the fact that it does not aim to provide a full account of the pragmatist tradition. Here Le Goff does not seek to establish any direct lineages but rather tries to show the enduring nature of the topics at the heart of the original pragmatist project, including, in particular, those linked to an abandonment of the model of representative democracy in favour of experiments based on the participation and deliberation of citizens. The book’s third and final chapter is devoted to current debates about participative and deliberative democracy in contemporary political philosophy-a debate which has, broadly speaking, been pursued independently of the pragmatist tradition in the strictest sense. Īfter an initial chapter devoted to John Dewey, the second chapter focuses on the work of Charles Wright Mills, a sociologist with an ambivalent relationship to pragmatism. The author adopts a very broad approach to the notion of radical democracy, perhaps even too broad as she includes authors such as Hannah Arendt, Claude Lefort, Cornelius Castoriadis, Jacques Rancière, Chantal Mouffe, and Sheldon Wolin, whereas the relevance of some of the connections made, most notably between Arendt and Mouffe, could be questioned. All these theories “examine the autonomy or the specificity of the political they champion an adversarial democracy as opposed to a liberalism perceived as seeking consensus they champion a plural and dynamic conception of identity they develop critical discourse about the processes of institutionalisation that are suspected of ‘betraying’ democratic dynamics” (p. Le Goff builds out from her critical perspective on the contemporary discourse of radical democracy, which she sees as united around a few common themes. Or at the very least, it is legitimate to ask whether or not their political philosophies can be considered to come under the category of participative or deliberative approaches. However, choosing to study this idea from the standpoint of pragmatism remains useful because if we follow Le Goff and take radical democracy to mean all participative and deliberative approaches to democracy, then the pragmatists can very easily be considered proponents of these approaches. With the exception of a short text by the philosopher John Dewey, the notion of radical democracy does not appear as a key concept in pragmatist political philosophy. Alice Le Goff’s book is part of this revival and offers a fresh perspective on ‘radical democracy’ based on the contributions of American pragmatism, which she views through the prism of a selection of major authors of this school of thought. For several years now, in France as elsewhere, political philosophy has been rediscovering American pragmatism whether by studying its classical texts or by drawing on its arguments in contemporary debates, for example those on deliberative democracy, epistemic democracy, or critical theory. ![]() ![]() ![]() Remove the pineapple spiral from the shaft and cut into chunks or rings.Remove the handle of the Peel’ n Core by pushing in the locking tabs with one hand and using the other hand to pull the handle up and out of the shaft. If it is difficult to pull out, give it a wriggle, as sometimes suction can be created.
